We have a term on the farm to describe a certain type of horse; "secret good."
These horses are unassuming in both look and personality. The type that often gets missed in a headcount for the farrier day list. These horses don't cause trouble and don't require anything extra. I almost passed on Penny when I saw her. She lacked any je ne sais quoi.
What she does have is quality. Penitence cannot be faulted for anything. Her conformation is impeccable, her movement is well above average, she has a beautiful expression, she does everything asked of her without any fuss, she is a friend of all in her turnout group oh, and she won $118k on dirt, turf and over fences, retiring sound after 23 starts. She is a perfect blood mare to use in an amateur friendly eventing program.
