Taproot Stud is located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just down the hill from Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail. We breed fine and proper Irish Draught crosses for sound, sane athletes to be competitive jumpers, event and first flight field hunters suited to the ambitious amateur rider. Our horses have been bred to be your ultimate partner for wherever your riding aspirations take you. We use a combination of Irish Draught with Thoroughbred and 'blood' warmbloods to create an elegant, noble horse with the aesthetic and performance of a classic Irish hunter deserving of an Alfred Munnings painting.
We have recently launched a hunter sport pony division, bringing our high quality and family raised ponies to market.
We provide stallion services to the public through fresh chilled semen from our Irish Sport stallion, Taproot Prime.
We sell in-utero contracts, youngstock, green and occasionally a made horse. Most of our produce sell at a young age. We show our yougstock in-hand and through the jump chute at open shows against all warmblood breeds. Later, we start our youngsters both in the arena and out on the trail to prepare them for real life.
All of our mares and foals are raised with the very best care; they eat low NSC diets, have their feet trimmed regularly and maintain a managed worming/inoculation schedule.
TSH is managed by Sarah and Andrew Henry. We live on the farm with all our horses as well as 3 young children and a flock of heritage and rare breed chickens, our Anatolian Athena and collie Jackson.
We are situated in the center of mid-Atlantic horse country, not far from all the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia We are also very convenient to Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Roanoke and Richmond airports for easy viewing of our stallions or sale stock.
We will soon be offering foaling out services as well as youngstock and mare-in-foal boarding.
Please take a minute to look around our site and don't hesitate to reach out with questions.
All animals have their 'moments' but we try to breed you level headed partners that can keep their whits about them. Most of this is simply because Irish Draughts are known for their fabulous temperaments but secondly, we specifically work with bloodlines known for the ability to learn and retain the training you put in.
